Totals
Over/under betting explained, plus what actually moves a total and how to approach these markets.
By Jared Narz · · 2 min read
A total (or over/under) is a bet on the combined score of both teams, regardless of who wins.
How it works
The book sets a number, say 51.5 points.
- Over 51.5 wins if the teams combine for 52 or more.
- Under 51.5 wins if they combine for 51 or fewer.
- Whole-number totals (like 8 runs) can push if the score lands exactly on the number.
Like spreads, totals are usually priced near -110 each way.
What moves totals
- Pace and style: fast-paced teams create more possessions and scoring chances.
- Weather: wind and rain matter in outdoor football and baseball.
- Lineups and injuries: missing key players on offense or defense.
- Starting pitchers and goalies: often the biggest single factor in baseball and hockey totals.
- Ballparks and venues: some parks play noticeably bigger or smaller.
Related markets
- Team totals: one team's points only.
- First-half / first-five-innings totals: isolate part of the game.
- Alternate totals: different numbers at different prices.
The JNarz approach
As with every bet, the goal is a good price. Compare the total and the juice across books. An over at 51.5 (-105) is a better bet than the same over at 52.5 (-110).
