Why Line Shopping Matters
Getting the best available price on every bet is the simplest, most reliable edge in sports betting.
By Jared Narz · · 2 min read
Line shopping means checking multiple sportsbooks and prediction markets and betting wherever the price is best. It sounds small. It isn't.
Illustrative example
Same bet, three prices:
| Platform | Odds | Break-even win rate |
|---|---|---|
| Platform 1 | +152 | 39.68% |
| Platform 2 | +145 | 40.82% |
| Platform 3 | +140 | 41.67% |
Taking +152 instead of +140 means you need to win about 2 percentage points less often to break even, on the exact same outcome. On a $100 bet, a win pays $152 instead of $140.
Spreads and totals too
Half a point matters. Getting +3.5 instead of +3 turns some losses into pushes or wins. Getting -105 instead of -110 lowers your break-even rate from 52.38% to 51.22%.
How to line shop
- Have accounts at several legal books and prediction markets available to you.
- Use an odds screen (like OddsJam, in our Betting Toolkit) to compare quickly.
- Track where you bet and what price you got.
The JNarz approach
We care about the number as much as the pick. That's why the daily free play is posted with the best price we found: the best bet is often the same bet at a better price.
